Heavy Metal Testing: AOAC 2015.01

For food products, heavy metal contamination isn't hypothetical, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury can enter your supply chain through soil, water, raw ingredients, and processing equipment. Identifying and controlling them is both a regulatory expectation and a brand responsibility.

At Twin Arbor Labs, we test food matrices for heavy metals using AOAC 2015.01, a validated multi-element ICP-MS method recognized by the FDA and international regulatory bodies. It's the right tool for food, sensitive enough to catch trace-level contamination, robust enough to hold up to scrutiny.

Unlike the supplement world, where USP <232> sets clear finished product limits, food heavy metal thresholds are governed by a mix of FDA action levels, commodity-specific guidance, and Proposition 65 thresholds. The right specification depends heavily on your product category, target population, and intended use.

Commonly tested food matrices include finished consumer goods, plant proteins, grains and legumes, produce-based ingredients, beverages, and dairy products.

Testing with dietary supplements or cosmetics? Heavy metal limits and methods differ significantly from food. Read about our USP-based approach for [Supplements & Nutraceuticals] or [Cosmetics & Personal Care].
